After a three-year hiatus due to COVID, the Ontario Wine Awards was back with a record number of entries for 2022. Seventy-four wineries from Niagara, Prince Edward County and South West Ontario entered 600 wines in the competition.
The judging by twelve panels took place at George Brown College on Saturday May 7th, with the awards ceremony being held at Niagara College. The medals for best in category were presented to the winemakers, with the quality of winemaking being exceptional this year. 30 wines received Gold medals, 39 Silver and 30 Bronze.
We are extremely pleased to announce that the Quench Magazine Riesling Dry Gold was awarded to our very own boutique winery! Niagara Teaching Winery and Strewn Winery were awards the silver and bronze, respectively.
The highest-scoring wines in the Ontario Wine Awards then compete against each other through an additional judging panel for the 2022 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Ontario Wines. Of all the Ontario Wine Award winning wines, only 9 were recognized for their overall excellence, regardless of vintage or varietal. And our Riesling was the only white wine to be awarded a Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence, with the remaining 8 awards going to 7 reds and 1 icewine.
Winemaker Ron Giesbrecht and co-owner Ying Feng were both present at the Lieutenant Governor’s awards, with Ron accepting on behalf of Wending Home.
