This May, we are proudly celebrating Asian Heritage Month in Canada. This is a time to recognize and honour the rich contributions of Asian Canadians to our shared culture and community. Throughout the month, we’ll be featuring and paying homage to Huaying (Ying) Feng, our co-owner and president, of Wending Home Winery. Ying stands as a testament to the enriching contributions of Asian Canadians, through her perseverance and commitment in helping to shape Canada’s diverse tapestry.
After immersing herself in the Wine and Viticulture Technician program at Niagara College, Ying found more than just viticulture and winemaking knowledge, she found a mentor and future partner in Ron Giesbrecht. A highly respected winemaker with at the time 35 years of experience and a deep understanding of Niagara’s terroir.
After completing three semesters studying in the program, before the harvest of 2019, Ying took a leap of faith and approached Ron with an idea, to join forces and become partners in bringing her vision for a winery to life.
Recognizing Ying’s determination, and deep respect for both tradition and innovation, Ron saw the potential for something special, and he too took a leap of faith by saying ‘yes’ to becoming partners, and winemaker.
Together, they began to envision a boutique winery rooted in the land Ying and her family had cultivated, and where their family home was built upon. Infused with the cultural values and work ethic that guided her journey. In 2020, that vision for Ying became reality with the founding of Wending Home Estate Vineyards & Winery.
Five years ago on May 10th, Ying and Ron officially became co-owners of Wending Home Winery. With this chapter not only are we proud to celebrate Asian Heritage Month in Canada, but we are also proud to celebrate our five-year anniversary!
What started as a search for land became a thriving venture, where every bottle tells a story of partnership, passion, and purpose.
Stay connected and watch for chapter two to be released next Thursday May 15th.
