This May, we are proudly celebrating Asian Heritage Month in Canada. This is a time to recognize and honour the rich contributions of Asian Canadians to our shared culture and community. Throughout the month, we’ll be featuring and paying homage to Huaying (Ying) Feng, our co-owner and president, of Wending Home Winery. Ying stands as a testament to the enriching contributions of Asian Canadians, through her perseverance and commitment in helping to shape Canada’s diverse tapestry.
Huaying (Ying) Feng’s journey from her hometown of Guangzhou, China, to the heart of Ontario’s wine country is a story of vision and resilience. After immigrating to Canada in 2015 with her husband, Jianneng Li, and their daughter, Amy, found their first leg of their journey landing them in Vancouver. But it soon became clear Vancouver was not where Ying wanted to be. Ying decided she wanted to find agricultural land where they could build a new life, a better life for her, and her husband, and their daughter.
This vision for land, was not necessarily to own a vineyard, Ying was unsure of what sort of farm property they would end up purchasing.
In 2018 Ying had found the property she had been looking for; they settled on a 20-acre vineyard that she fell in love with in the heart of wine country, with vines dating back to the late 1990’s.
To deepen her understanding of viticulture Ying, enrolled in the Wine and Viticulture Technician program at Niagara College, where she studied under renowned winemaker Ron Giesbrecht.
This program provided her with a comprehensive education in viticulture and winemaking, laying the groundwork for her successful venture into the wine industry.
Stay connected and watch for chapter two to be released next Thursday May 8th.
